high ceilings and marble counters — a format the brand does not run anywhere else, and a long way from the battery-powered cart it started on.

An upstairs matcha bar. The whole upper floor is a dedicated matcha counter styled after a New York cocktail bar, which is a fair reflection of a business where matcha drinks account for around half of what is sold.

Automated espresso machines, deliberately. The brand builds its offer on machine-driven consistency rather than on barista craft — the same drink, the same way, at any hour and in any city.

Pastries from a Leeds bakery. The counter is supplied by Laynes Bakery, an independent Leeds operation baking out of Armley, rather than by a national contract — an unusually local touch for an international chain.

A US start-up, not a British coffee house. Founded in Brooklyn in 2020, it reached London in 2022 and now runs dozens of UK sites; Leeds was one of the last big English cities to get one.

Somewhere to actually sit. Most Blank Street shops are grab-and-go boxes. This one has seating on both levels, which changes what the brand is for in this city.

What’s in the cup

It would be dishonest to write about this coffee the way you write about a single-origin bar down the road. Blank Street is a chain, and a chain’s promise is not terroir — it is repeatability. The espresso is pulled on automated machines calibrated centrally, which is a choice, not a compromise: it removes the variable of who happens to be on shift, and it means the flat white you buy on a chaotic Saturday is the same as the one you bought on a quiet Tuesday. Speciality purists find that soulless. Several million customers find it reassuring. Both positions are defensible, and you should know which camp you are in before you queue.

The bigger story is that this is not really an espresso business any more. Matcha has become roughly half of what the company sells, and the flavoured matcha line — the blueberry and white chocolate variants that went round the internet — is what most of the queue is there for. Giving the entire upper floor over to a matcha counter is not a design flourish; it is an accurate diagram of the balance sheet. Alongside it sits a rotating seasonal menu, so the drink that defines a visit in November will not be the one that defines a visit in June.

What you will not find is a filter programme, a rotating guest roaster or a conversation about processing methods. That is not a failure of ambition — it is a different business entirely, and the shop does not pretend otherwise.

Who’s behind it

Blank Street was started in Brooklyn in 2020 by Vinay Menda and Issam Freiha, two friends who had come to New York to study — Menda from the UAE, Freiha from Lebanon — joined by Ignacio Llado. The first version of the business was not a shop at all but a battery-powered coffee cart on a Brooklyn street corner, which tells you where the obsession with tiny footprints and low fixed costs comes from. The model borrowed openly from Asian beverage chains rather than from the European café tradition: small units, fast service, an app, and a menu built for people walking rather than sitting.

The first permanent site followed in 2021, London arrived in 2022, and the UK became the company’s most important market outside the United States. Opening the largest store in the entire estate in Leeds — and having a co-founder describe it publicly as the most beautiful store the company has built — is a statement about where the brand thinks its British future lies, well outside London.

What kind of visit it suits

In most cities Blank Street is a takeaway proposition and nothing else — you order, you wait a very short time, you leave. Leeds is the exception, and that reshapes the answer. Here there is real seating across two floors, which makes it viable for a meeting, a catch-up or a stop in the middle of a shopping afternoon rather than only for a cup carried out of the door.

The upstairs matcha bar is the room to aim for if you want to sit. It is the more considered, more atmospheric of the two levels, deliberately built to feel like an evening bar rather than a café, and it puts a floor between you and the till queue. The ground floor, with its open counter and constant flow, is where the energy is and where you will be if you are staying five minutes.

For laptop work, temper expectations. The brand’s entire operating model is throughput, the audience skews young and social, and nothing here is designed around long stays; there is no published policy on laptops, but the acoustics and the queue answer the question well enough. Come for an hour with headphones and you will be fine. Come to write a dissertation and you have picked the wrong end of the city centre. Where it is genuinely strong: a fast, predictable drink in the middle of a busy shopping street, and somewhere to take a teenager who cares more about the matcha menu than about extraction ratios.

The room and the atmosphere

The building is the surprise. This is a listed structure with the ornamental detail and ceiling height that implies, and the fit-out leans into the contrast: brand-standard mint green against period plasterwork, marble counters, clean sight lines. On the ground floor the counter is open, so the drink-making is on show — a deliberate piece of theatre for a company that automates the extraction.

Upstairs is the more interesting half. The matcha bar is styled as something closer to a New York cocktail room than a coffee shop, and it functions as a separate venue with a separate mood. It is also, in practice, the quieter option, though “quiet” is relative in a shop that drew queues down the street on its opening day and still runs busy at weekends. There is no outdoor terrace; this is an indoor, city-centre room in a pedestrian shopping district.

What goes with the coffee

The food offer is a counter, not a kitchen: pastries and sweet things to accompany a drink, with no cooked plates. The detail worth knowing is where they come from. Rather than shipping in from a national supplier, the Leeds shop takes its pastries from Laynes Bakery, an independent Leeds business baking in Armley whose products turn up in good rooms across the city. For a chain that could easily have defaulted to a central contract, that is a real concession to local supply, and it means the thing on your plate has a Leeds postcode behind it even if the drink in your hand was designed in New York.

Beyond that, expect the brand’s own sweet range, including matcha ice cream and seasonal specials that rotate several times a year.

When to come

This is a daytime shopping-street operation: it opens in time for people heading to work and closes in the evening rather than running late. The weekly rhythm is the retail district’s rhythm — steady on weekday mornings, busy through the middle of the day, and heaving on Saturdays, when the shopping crowd and the matcha crowd arrive at once. If you want the upstairs bar with a table to yourself, a weekday outside the lunch hour is the reliable window. Expect a queue at peak; it moves fast by design, but it exists.

Getting there

You are in the middle of the main Leeds shopping district, a couple of minutes from the largest department stores and the pedestrianised retail core, and roughly ten minutes on foot from Leeds railway station. Leeds has no underground, so this is a walking or bus proposition, and the bus network of the city centre passes within a short walk. The easiest landmark is the big pharmacy and department-store corner of the shopping district — the building is the one with the period façade and the mint-green interior visible through the glass. Anyone in the centre can point you at it.

Good to know

Be clear-eyed about what this is. Blank Street is a venture-backed chain optimised for speed and repeatability, and it has taken public criticism on two fronts: the sugar content of some of the flavoured drinks, and a customer base that skews heavily towards teenagers and young adults. Neither is a secret, and neither is a reason to avoid the place — but if you were expecting a quiet independent with a hand-drawn brew list, this is not it.

Equally, do not judge the Leeds shop by other Blank Streets you have used. This one is a flagship: it has space, seating, a separate upstairs bar and a listed interior, none of which the standard kiosk format offers. If a previous experience of the brand was a three-minute transaction through a hatch, this is a different proposition.

The shop does not publish detail on dogs, step-free access between floors or power sockets, and a listed building with a staircase is exactly the case where you should check rather than assume.

Questions and answers

Is this really the biggest Blank Street in the world?

That is how the company presented it at the opening — two floors in a listed city-centre building, larger than anything else in the estate, and described by a co-founder as the most beautiful store the brand has built.

When did it open?

At the end of November 2025, in a unit on the main shopping street that had previously been a Starbucks.

Do they use automatic espresso machines?

Yes. Machine-driven consistency is central to the brand’s model rather than an embarrassment — the trade-off is predictability instead of barista-to-barista variation.

Is it mainly a coffee shop or a matcha bar?

Increasingly the latter. Matcha drinks make up around half of what the company sells, and in Leeds an entire floor is given over to a dedicated matcha counter.

Where do the pastries come from?

From Laynes Bakery, an independent Leeds bakery based in Armley, rather than from a national supplier — a genuinely local element in an international chain.

Can I sit down, or is it takeaway only?

You can sit. That is unusual for this brand: most of its shops are compact takeaway formats, whereas the Leeds site has seating on both levels.

Is it a good place to work?

For a short session, yes, especially upstairs. For a full working day, no — the format is built around turnover and the room is busy and young.

Who founded the company?

Vinay Menda and Issam Freiha, who met as students in New York, with Ignacio Llado. It began in 2020 as a battery-powered coffee cart in Brooklyn and reached London in 2022.

Is there anything to be aware of before ordering?

Some of the flavoured drinks are notably sweet — the sugar levels have been publicly criticised — so if that matters to you, the plainer end of the menu is the safer choice.

<div
